Vista Hell

Just recently I had a pretty odd/different job to do at work it involved setting up 16 Sony Vaio laptops with Windows Vista on. The job required them to all be setup to use a 3G network adapter (express card), out of the box the laptops needed to just be setup with usernames and passwords but to get the card to work it required vista to be updated so that it wouldn't just lockup when i inserted the device.

The end figures of success ment that I had one laptop that didn't crash at all, the rest all crashed and 3 machines ended with me doing a factory reset of the operating system to get them to work, personally I don't think they are good odds.

As long as I don't have to do it again in the near future I'm happy, I'll leave you with a few pictures I took during the procedure.

RE: Bringing Linux to the masses

In reply to yesterdays topic of bringing alternative computing to the masses I got a reply from Business Link with a simple answer, it gave me no results quickly which to be honest I'm not expecting, but at least its a step in the right direction.

What they said is below and you can make your own minds up as to weather it is a fob off or a real consideration;

"Many thanks for your email. I will certainly consider this topic when we are planning our future events calendar."

Either way its better then nothing and if more people do it, it may just work.

Bringing Linux to the masses

After a conversation with someone regarding how to bring Linux and alternative computing system to the masses, I dropped into the conversation Business Link Wessex (if you don't know their are Business Link groups around the country helping business improve there service and standards) I'm sure there are other groups doing the same thing where this still applies, his reply to me dropping this information was that is not enough demand for seminars on this subject.

This bit of information leads me in only one direction to go the business Link and ask them if they had any plans to educate business to the thought that Linux is a viable alternative to windows and/or OSX.

I have yet to hear a reply from them but I guess it is short notice to get a reply already but when I hear something I'll be sure to post the details.

In closing I'm sure it would take more then just my self to request this kind of information to push them into thinking that it would be a good thing for them to do so give it a go as well send off an email at the end of the day it takes less then 5 minutes and can't do any harm.

What is blogging

As this is the first post of my new blog i though best to start of with my opinion of blogging (that way you can decide weather you may ever want to read the content of my blog or not.), now in no way am i preaching that what i believe is wright or the be all and end all of blogging it's merely my opinion.

I'll set the background that brought me to starting a new blog, I recently went to my local Linux User Group (LUG , SLUG ) meeting after not going for a while, the meetings have change a little with a semi formal structure but, in the post presentation chat up came the subject of blogging and what it can do.

My first comments where to state my dislike of blogs that only has posts about how wonderful or not that the authors life is, my second dislike was of people that have blogs just to let the world know what a wonderful video, game or website they found on the internet while randomly browsing the internet in there spare time which seem to be all day for some this is because they are unemployed idiots. (hopefully no one was offended by that short rant)

I personally only want to read a blog if its of informational content and of direct interest to me on a set subject, or its someones opinion of a subject that has some grounding with the truth.

Now in I know a blog of opinions can vary a lot from person to person this is where bookmarks or RSS readers come in handy if i read something thats good then i can remember, and again if its crap not remember it. On top of this comes tagging but I'll get onto that in another post in the future.

so in final note I want to let you know that i hope in the future to blog on subjects i deem interesting and try and get some nice opinionated conversations going.
